TerraLogos Goes Carbon Neutral with Wind PowerAugust 7, 2007 Press Release BALTIMORE – TerraLogos, located in Baltimore, Maryland, announced that it will offset 100% of the carbon impact of its operating companies through the purchase Renewable Energy Certificates. The TerraLogos companies include Green Home Services, which focuses on home energy inspections and improvements, and Eco Architecture, which focuses on green building and sustainable design.
To accomplish offsetting 100% of its carbon impact, TerraLogos partnered with WindCurrent, a local company that provides Renewable Energy Certificates to businesses in the Washington-Baltimore corridor. These Renewable Energy Certificates represent units of power generated from renewable energy sources, such as wind farms.
By supporting renewable energy sources (like wind power) instead of traditional electricity sources (like coal and natural gas), TerraLogos is avoiding the production of several tons of carbon dioxide emissions each month. This is the carbon equivalent of planting roughly six acres of trees, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) figures.
The firm has agreed to purchase the Renewable Energy Certificates for up to ten years.
“Our commitment to 100% wind power is part of our company’s environmental obligation as caretakers for future generations.” said Peter Van Buren, president of TerraLogos Green Home Services, Inc. “TerraLogos is serving as a role model for organizations who want to support energy independence and be environmentally responsible. TerraLogos now qualifies for the U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership Club, a voluntary program that supports and recognizes green power purchasers,” said Jim Maguire, the president of WindCurrent.
As a result of TerraLogos’ purchase, wind power from a windfarm will be supplied to the power grid, replacing electricity generated from traditional power sources.
“Our business helps homeowners reduce their carbon impact. Therefore, we felt as a company we would reduce the carbon impact from our operations with Renewable Energy Certificates,” said Kim Schaefer, principal of TerraLogos Eco Architecture. “Using renewable power has helped us achieve our goal to be carbon neutral – which is a sound and important choice for businesses today.”
WindCurrent provides a way for environmentally conscious organizations to support clean, renewable wind power. Each large wind turbine generates enough electrical power for hundreds of homes, or dozens of businesses. Leaders in the community are partnering with WindCurrent to encourage the creation of these new sources of alternative energy. ###
