The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Internship Program

ETC partnered with the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to match business students with internship opportunities in your organizations.  The Carey Business School is primarily a part-time program for working professionals and has a number of specialized and joint degrees in the areas of technology, organization development, marketing, etc. A full-time Global MBA program will launch in Fall, 2010.

How do I recruit an intern at Carey Business School?
  • Employer completes Intern Job Description Template and Internship Employer Agreement and return to Lauren Klentak at  with a copy to Fulya Gursel.
  • Lauren will market the opportunity to appropriate candidates through Carey Business School Career Services.
  • Candidates apply directly to Lauren who will forward a batch of resumes to the employer in about a week’s time.
  • Employer reviews resumes and selects candidates to interview.
  • Candidates may be interviewed via phone, onsite at ETC, or at a Carey Business School facility.
  • Communicate final decision and any general feedback to Lauren.
How are internships structured for students at Carey Business School?
  • Often part-time or project based, especially for students in Part-Time programs
  • Students perform work around their other work and school commitments
  • Not for school credit but evaluation from supervisor expected
  • Employer and Career Services must sign attached Policy Document
What should an internship look like?

Career Services strongly recommends using the following criteria when developing an internship position;
  • Meaningful work (e.g., research, analysis, project management, etc.) that is clearly defined and appropriate for the intern’s level of experience (e.g., Graduate vs. Undergraduate),
  • Opportunity to “own” or manage a distinct piece of work or deliverable a plus,
  • Supervision by a company leader/sponsor with regular feedback and coaching,
  • Opportunities for exposure/networking within the organization.

What’s the going rate for Carey Business School interns?

There is a wide range when it comes to internship compensation depending on the following factors: candidate level of experience, complexity of role, employer financial status, amount of mentoring available. 

Below are some guidelines for how you might compensate your intern.  Please use your own judgment when determining the compensation rate that is most appropriate for your organization and role;
  • $10-14/hr: intern is provided significant mentoring and direction, has minimum relevant experience, work is supervised and frequent feedback is given.
  • $15-20/hr: intern has some relevant experience, is given periodic mentoring/feedback but can self-direct on most tasks, able to manage multiple project components simultaneously.
Are international students eligible?
  • International students may participate in an internship, but it is the student’s responsibility to follow school regulations to adhere to the requirements of their Visa status.
  • International students are required to enroll in a non-credit Internship class to ensure their school relationship status is maintained per their visa requirement.  It is the student’s responsibility to make the necessary arrangements to maintain their visa requirements
